Work from home when you can

Themes: Commuting, Health and wellbeing

Description

The coronavirus pandemic has shown it is possible for many of us to work from home. Home working removes the need for making the journey to work. As travel is among the biggest contributors to our carbon footprint, working from home at least some of the time can make a difference.

Ask your employer whether you could work from home. You may be able to request a contribution from your employer or a rebate from the Government to cover your energy and internet costs.

However, be aware! In the winter months, having your boiler running more often may cancel out your transport savings. It depends how energy efficient your house is who else is at home and how it is heated.

Working from home isn’t for everyone. Some people prefer to keep their work and home life separate. Many key professions like tradespeople, teachers and hospital workers can’t work from home.

BUT with a third of the UK workforce doing office-based work, there’s plenty of potential for people to save money AND lower congestion for people who have no choice but to drive.
